Ameet Kamath‘Greasy Rails’Singer Songwriter / Modern Jazz / Pophttp://www.ameetkamath.comBy C.W. RossAmeet Kamath was born and raised in Mumbai before moving to the U.S., living in several cities on the east coast before heading west settling in San Francisco. His debut release ‘Greasy Rails’ was recorded in only two days on what he describes as, ‘a shoestring budget,’ at both Dirty Soap Studios in New York City and San Pablo Recorders in Berkeley, California. That time frame is in sharp contrast to the long two years that it took Ammet to write the material that’s found on, ‘Greasy Rails.’‘Greasy Rails’ has two main themes that run throughout it. The first revolves around the sometimes hard life of an immigrant to a new country. The second revolves around the universal emotion of love. Also found in these two themes is an undercurrent that you must stay true to both yourself and beliefs in life.Stylistically the music ranges from singer songwriter, pop, and modern jazz to almost having a 60′s folk-rock protest vibe at times.Ameet has a nice smooth vocal style that works well with the songs. I also thought that the instrumentation was very well done, especially the horn and piano parts that are often found in the forefront of the songs, along with the drum and guitar parts that are content to shine more from the background in them.Highlight tracks for me included, “San Francisco”, “Can I Have Some of It”, and “Too Late to Die Young.”With the pointed lyrics found in the songs that make up Ameet Kamath’s debut release ‘Greasy Rails’, depending on your point of view will either leave you with a bad taste in your mouth thinking that they come off as a bit whiny and unappreciative or have you nodding your head in agreement to their honest views on the hard life and struggles that immigrants often face in their new homeland.
