The explosion happened at a mine in Hongtong county in the northern province of Shanxi, which is China's largest coal-producing province. Local media report that 104 miners died in the explosion and only 15 survived. According to one of China’s state-media outlets, the rescue team believes managers at the Xinyao mine delayed reporting the accident and instead tried to launch their own rescue operation, which increased the death toll.
