About this episode

Dr Graham Thom wraps up our research team's week-long visit to Christmas Island, saying that they gained valuable insight into how the immigration operation is run on the island and that it confirmed that all asylum seekers should be treated equally, regardless of their mode of arrival. One of the main findings from their visit is that the remoteness of this location makes Christmas Island a very impractical site for an immigration processing centre. Visit http://www.amnesty.org.au/refugees/comments/22308 for more information on Amnesty International's December 2009 visit to Christmas Island to investigate conditions for asylum seekers detained under Australian immigration policy.
