Amanda Dunsmore is a visual artist and lecturer in Sculpture & Combined Media at LSAD, Ireland. Utilizing sound, video, photography and installation she explores contemporary social issues.Past major public art projects include the Keeper Project based in Northern Ireland and the Plan Project in Germany. She has exhibited widely in Ireland and also in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Iceland, Germany, Switzerland, Poland and Austria.
This video is of political office workers staging actions of immersion in their working environment. The artworks depict an impotent protest with references to Edwin Wurm and instruction manuals on atomic blast survival techniques.
The action is universal, paradoxical and absurd. The resultant works are visual metaphors, representative of contemporary social/political issues, and personal interrelationships. The simplicity of the action allows it to be easily accessed to everyone. And everyone occasionally feels like disengaging with his or her surroundings. Billy Hull was the longest serving security prison officer (twenty-five years) at the notorious Maze/Long Kesh prison, situated outside Belfast, Northern Ireland. Against prison policy, Billy collected items relating to various individuals, incidents and occurrences. On his retirement Billy made a presentation, a museum, inside the Maze, which was never seen by the public. A part of the Keeper Series Maze/Long Kesh Project, Nothern Ireland.
