Over the last month alone in Somalia, more than 200 people were killed and more than 100,000 fled the capital city, Mogadishu. Relief agencies report that they can’t distribute aid to the refugees because the fighting between the government and armed groups is intensifying. The United Nations reported this week that Somalis are experiencing near-daily atrocities, including rape and the shelling of civilian areas. In Italy, representatives from more than 35 countries gathered to discuss ways to stabilize Somalia and support the weak Transitional Federal Government, whose legitimacy is being challenged by the rebel groups. On Wednesday, Riz discussed the country’s worsening crisis with Somali Foreign Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Omaar and Somalia-American activist Sadia Ali Aden. Less
