Malaria is a significant problem here: 50% of all medical cases are malaria related and 40% of children tested have malaria. A household by household survey established the exact number of nets needed to achieve universal coverage so that all sleeping spaces can be covered with a net. Significant malaria education messages, community leadership involvement and ongoing attention to net usage and monit...
20,000 nets were distributed in some 250 villages in the Ntcheu and Dedza districts to achieve blanket coverage - coverage of all sleeping spaces. By protecting all people when they sleep at night form the malaria-carrying mosquitoes that bite typically between 10pm and 2am the effect on malaria cases in the community is expected to be dramatic. 2,100 nets were distributed in this rural area of Sami district in the Central River Region of The Gambia. This is a high malaria endemic area of the country. The communities reside about one to two Kilometres alongside the river and lakes otherwise known as riverside or swampy areas. They are predominantly engaged in rice cultivation and animal husbandry. There is abundant stagnant water in the lakes and rice fields due to high rainfall and tidal water from the river. The environment is there...

This distribution was to the rural village of Nakaswa. The whole distribution was to children living in this area. The population of the area is approx 2500.This is a high risk area not just because of Uganda being a high risk country but because of the location & ; the poor conditions the children live in.
This distribution was the 2nd of 3 phases to distribute nets over the entire district of Chikumbi to ensure all 13 villages had every sleeping space covered in a fight to eradicate or drastically reduce the impact of Malaria. Each of the 3 villages had provided a census of their population and their sleeping spaces. Malaria is a huge problem in Chikumbi and there is little or no support in the prevention or cure phase of the disease. Few people can afford nets and or the drugs to treat malaria.
The nets were distributed in a rural village in Entebbe called Katabi Busambaga. The village has a population of 2,500. 1,400 nets, including 200 to cover a nearby orphanage, will achieve blanket coverage. The area is near a lake surrounded by bushes that harbour mosquitoes. As a result malaria has become endemic in the area and has claimed a number of lives. it is therefore considered a high risk area.
