The GRiSP-funded workshop “Boosting agricultural mechanization in rice-based systems in sub-Saharan Africa” was held at AfricaRice, St. Louis, Senegal, 6-8 June 2011. Around 40 participants from different countries attended the workshop to develop a road map and action plans to boost mechanization in rice-based systems in Sub Saharan Africa. Discussions and presentations focused on the equipment needed in each country, approaches and business models, and capacity development to sustain the industry. Representatives from national and international rice R&D organizations (AfricaRice, IRRI, JICA and CARD), government officials, local and international manufacturers of agricultural machinery, credit suppliers attended the workshop, which included visits to the AfricaRice Station in St. Louis, Senegal.
