McGraw-Hill Announces Winners of Learn Smart and Win Student Video Contest; Patagonia Files for Benefit Corporation Status - CSR Minute for January 9, 2012

McGraw-Hill has announced the winners of its “Learn Smart and Win” student video competition. Students from San Diego State University and Bunker Hill Community College were the top prizewinners from more than 100 submitted original videos. The winners will receive scholarships totaling ,000, and their videos will be featured on McGraw-Hill websites and social media channels. In all, 50 winning videos were chosen—other prizes included iPads and Flipcams. The video contest was designed to showcase how digital technology enhances learning.

Patagonia is the first company to request “benefit corporation” status in California. That legal definition requires a business to consider environmental and social benefits over financial returns, to have a corporate purpose of making a positive impact on society and the environment, and to publicly report using a transparent third party standard. California is one of seven states that has passed benefit corporation laws in recent years. The outdoor clothing company was joined by 11 other Californian businesses in filing for the new corporate status.
