<blip:puredescription>With the episode marking 10 Minute Joomla! Tips one year anniversary, your host Marco and the Conticreative.com team bring you a multi part Screencast about Joomla Security and what can be done to secure your Joomla website, your server, your computer and the way you work when building web sites. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------NOTE: You can find links, checklists and other information I discuss in the this episode here: www.conticreative.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While focused on the Joomla CMS, this series of Screencasts on Joomla Security contain enough information to interest anyone concerned about PHP security for their own web site. One of the tools I'll demo in a future episode is the "OSE PHP Security Suite" a comprehensive security suite offered by Open Source Excellence. The suite is based on Joomla but it is installed as a stand alone, strip down, Joomla site. It can help protect many PHP scripts installed on the server.I'll also demo other products I find useful, if not outright necessary, such as Roboform (PC) and 1Password (MAC), two of the best "Password Managers" available. A class of software no serious computer user should be without and that help users manage complex passwords and other sensitive data. Not only you can save hours (and your sanity) by not looking for passwords in some unsecured text file, but you can also use them to keep and transmit a variety of sensitive data. All by memorizing a single master password.I don't pretend to be a security experts. In fact, I discovered a bit over a year ago that I was a security dilettante. I knew enough to get by and hoped that luck and good intentions would protect my sites. As inexperienced as I was, I probably still ranked in the top 5% or 10% when it came to Joomla security compared to the average Joomla user. I took most of the major precautions suggested in the Joomla forum, tried to practice "safe computing" as much as I could and I was always careful how I handled passwords and other sensitive information. But obviously it wasn't enough. This past year I was forced to learn a lot more about security. In this 2 or 3 part series (still to be decided as I have 50 minutes of raw footage to work with) I am going to try to cover the topic in an approachable yet comprehensive fashion. Starting with a user's own computer, to the best type of servers and how to secure them, to finally Joomla and its Security concerns.I don't claim to be a security "Guru" (yet, hopefully), but I feel that I have learned a great deal of useful information I would like to share for everyone's benefit. I hope that these podcasts will inform those that are just starting out and inspire the "Security Experts" to contribute their knowledge and experience. I hope you'll enjoy this Screencast and that you'll help me celebrate 10 Minute Joomla! Tips first anniversary. <blip:puredescription>We all need forms for our sites. Even though Joomla provides a contact form in its basic installation, it is limited in scope and subject to SPAM unless countermeasures are taken.Joomla Forms, by Blue Flame Ltd. is a powerful and easy to use Joomla component that allows anyone to create refined forms without having to learn how to code. Joomla Forms is one of many offerings in the Joomla universe, but after trying almost all of them over the years I found them to be the best compromise between price, features, code weight and ease of use.In this issue of 10 Minute Joomla! Tips I go over the most important features of the program. By necessity I have had to hurry up and edit many of the secondary, but still important, features of Joomla Forms. I apologize for some of the quick edits in the podcast. But I hoe this issue will give you a good overview of the product and I encourage you to check the demo (http://www.joomla-forms.com/demo) on your own and watch the tutorials online at: instructional videos available at: http://www.joomla-forms.com/watch-videos/Joomla Forms is certainly one of the best form components for Joomla and it's soon going to be even better with the addition of xEdit, a Jquery graphical interface that will allow anyone to build interactive forms.Interactive forms are the kind that change dynamically in response to user input and if there is enough interest I will dedicate a future podcast on this new "widget".Joomla Forms, as far as I know, is the first Joomla Form component that will sport this integration.Thank you for watching 10 Minute Joomla Tips and don't forget to subscribe to our streams on Conticreative.com: http://www.conticreative.com/10-Minute-Joomla-Tips-Video-Podcast/Itunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/10-minute-joomla-tips/id325350784Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/channels/10minutejoomlatipsYoutube: http://www.youtube.com/user/10minutejoomlaBlip.tv: http://10minutejoomlatips.blip.tv/Feedburner: http://feeds.feedburner.com/10MinutesJoomlaTipsMiro: http://miroguide.com/feeds/12110</blip:puredescription>

Tips Screencast "Upload Joomla from Local to Live Server"Moving Joomla from one server to another is a very valuable skill to have. It's not just necessary to launch or deploy new web sites but it's useful for many different reasons. For instance, creating a live site clone to troubleshoot a bug or creating a "staging" area for training an office staff. In this 2 part Screencast Marco shows you how to upload a local Joomla website to a Cpanel Server step by step. For even more help here is a checklist you can use while you are working on your first Joomla upload to your server:Moving a Joomla Site from a Local Server to a Live serverNOTE: This checklist assumes you have Cpanel on the live server and you have used XAMP for your local server.Locate the local folder where your site is (usually htdocs/yourfolder)Open the folder and select your Joomla filesUse your ZIP program to create a ZIP fileGo to your Cpanel and click on "File Manager"Navigate to your public_html folderIf necessary, create another folder where you'll upload the ZIP file you just created. If the file is going live, you can expand directly in public_htmlIn Cpanel's File manager Click on "Upload" and, from the new window, search for your zip file and click UploadOnce it's done, go back to the file manager and click on "Reload" and you'll see the zip fileSelect the ZIP file and click on the "Expand" Icon - Your files should be now in the directory of your choiceGo to the Copanel DB manager and create a new databaseNow create a new user and remember to assign it to the new database Throughout this process, make sure to take some notes of the various names and passwords.Go back to your local site and in XAMP open PhpMyAdmin. Click on the "Export" tab.Locate your database and export itNow, in Cpanel open PhpMyAdmin and click on the "Import"Once again, locate the DB file you just exported and upload itNow go to your file manager and select "configuration.php". Click on "Edit" or "Code Editor" (or use the editor of your choice locally and upload the file)Change these fields:var $log_path = 'D:xampphtdocslocalvmlogs'; var $tmp_path = 'D:xampphtdocslocalvm mp'; to something like this: var $log_path = '/home/youraccount/public_html/yourfolder/logs'; var $tmp_path = '/home/youraccount/public_html/yourfolder/tmp'; Then find these fields: var $user = 'root'; var $password = ''; var $db = 'yourDB'; and change them with your own data from the new Database and user you just created. If you have a Virtuemart store, remember to change these entries: define( 'URL', 'D:xampphtdocslocalvm\' ); define( 'SECUREURL', 'D:xampphtdocslocalvm\' ); to the ones relative to your own site by going to administrator/components/com_virtuemart/virtuemart.cfg.php</blip:puredescription>

<blip:puredescription>In this issue of 10 Minute Joomla! Tips we are going to take a look at Joomla's Sections and Categories structure. No other topic has confused so many people so needlessly in the Joomla world. Sections and Categories are simply a categorization system where Sections could more easily be thought about as Categories and the categories themselves as "sub-categories". I am sure, many are now just as confused as before. So why not view this Screencast and take a look not only at what Sections and Categories are, but also at the new K2 component, which turns the concept on its head (and forecasts the way the upcoming new version of Joomla will work), as well as how to create the proper menu links to display sections and categories in Joomla. This is a 15 minute long version of the Screencast and I had to create a 2 part series for youtube viewers. Since I didn't want to start calling it the "15 minute Joomla! tips" screencast, I hope you can forgive this breach in format.Enjoy the video.</blip:puredescription>

<blip:puredescription>Have you ever forgotten your Joomla Admin Password? In this Video, Marco of ContiCreative.com will show you a few simple methods for retrieving your admin password in Joomla! The first method is the simplest: Just click on the "Forgot Password?" Link in your login module. But what if your login module is not published? Then use this link: http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php?option=com_user&view=reset to bring up the password reset page.(For the username the link is http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php?option=com_user&view=remindDid you use the wrong email when you created the site? Bummer! The trick above won't work. It's time to go to PhpMyAdmin and perform some magic on the MD5 hash Joomla stores the password in.In the Screencast, Marco will show you how to copy an MD5 hash from one website database to another or you can even generate your own MD5 and paste it in the proper field by Googling "MD5 Generator" or going to http://www.adamek.biz/md5-generator.php where by entering any string in the appropriate field you'll generate an MD5 you can then paste in your "password" field in PMA. (In the screencast, I had not tested this method yet so I left it unanswered)Either way, you won't need to dispare if you forgot your password. One way or another you'll be able to get back in.</blip:puredescription>
